A groundbreaking ceremony was held today for the County of Maui’s Wailuku Town Improvement Project. Road improvements will begin this week on Church Street as part of Phase 1A of the project.
The Department of Management says crews from MIRA Image Construction, LLC will be working from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Infrastructure improvements at the intersection of Church Street and Main Street will occur after peak traffic hours and on weekends.
“This first phase of construction includes much-needed upgrades for residents of Wailuku and our county as a whole,” said Mayor Michael Victorino. “These improvements will serve residents and businesses for the next 50 years and beyond by providing quality roads, water and sewer lines, and drainage systems. Sidewalks will also be improved to ensure safety and walkability for pedestrians that frequent our local Wailuku businesses.
“I appreciate the patience of the community while work is ongoing,” Mayor Victorino said.
The first portion of construction on Church Street, from Main Street to Vineyard Street, will take approximately six months to complete. One lane access will be open at all times, and the Wailuku Municipal Parking Lot will remain open during this time.
Special duty officers will be on site to help ensure public safety by assisting with lane closures and traffic control. Pedestrians and motorists are advised to proceed with caution as excavation will take place across multiple sections of roadways, sidewalks and driveways.
Improvements on Lower Vineyard Street, from Market Street to Church Street, are slated to begin in July 2020, and will take approximately six months to complete. Work on Upper Vineyard Street, from Church Street to High Street, will begin in December 2020 and is expected to take five months to complete.
During construction on Lower Vineyard Street and Upper Vineyard Street, parking will be available at Wells Park and portions of the Municipal Parking Lot will be open.
